Dia De Los Muertos Festival Hollywood Forever Cemetery: Flash-on-Camera with George Simian

November 2 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Ticket Registration

Does flash on camera work outdoors? How can we use it to make great shots? Find out at the annual Dia De Los Muertos Festival at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

This yearly festival is a photographer’s paradise, with thousands of participants dressed-up and made-up in the Mexican tradition of honoring our ancestors. We will make portraits during the afternoon, balancing the sunlight with our on-camera flash! We will practice strategies for interacting with the subjects, and framing for maximum impact, to complement our speedlight techniques.

We will meet at the entrance at 1PM and provide the tickets. You bring your camera, flash, extra batteries, and extra memory cards. We will start with some exercises to gain control of our cameras and flashes, then move into the crowd, to make portraits, working in pairs. We will try to stay close, but we will definitely meet again at 4:45, back at the entrance, to review our shoot. You’re encouraged to spend the rest of the day at the festival (after dark, it turns into a wild party…) but our workshop is focused on using the flash to balance the sunlight!

A week after the workshop, you will contribute images to a class web page and get to see what everyone got.

George Simian is a commercial photographer, a people person, an advocate for photographers’ rights (American Photographic Artists board member), and an educator (UCLA, Samy’s Camera, Bali Photo Workshop), recognized by PDN Magazine as one of the dozen Best Photo Workshop Instructors nationwide.
