Jazz dance was first the wholly-American genre, born out of both African-American tradition and Musical Theatre which went on to usher in the dance form of the music-video! The choreography and dancers of the JazzAntiqua ensemble beautifully portray the sensual nature of this dance, as well as the aggressive, tightly-wound and exposively emotional aspects of it.
We will host the JazzAntiqua company for a full Saturday afternoon, on June 15, from noon-6pm, and photograph them in a pure and abstract white light, to better highlight the strong gestures of the dancers. This will be our first workshop with jazz dancers – and you’re in for an overload of beauty!
Only 12 photographers will have the opportunity to shoot, in 3 teams of 4, using professional Profoto strobe lighting, from Samy’s Camera Rentals, to make striking and iconic images of jazz! We will provide the instruction, as well as the lighting equipment, the studio, and the dancers – all you need to bring is your camera, charged batteries and formatted memory cards, and comfortable clothes for laying on the floor. Drinks and light snacks will be supplied. A week after the workshop, everyone will submit their best dozen images, to share with the dancers, and to create a class web gallery!
I am a Los Angeles based commercial photographer with 25 years experience of providing services to Corporate and Editorial clients. Projects have included providing photography for annual reports, advertising and marketing materials, and magazine features, shot on locations around the US and the world.
I am also a photography educator who teaches at UCLA Extension (2007 Instructor of the Year), Samy’s Camera, and one-on-one. I lead travel photography workshops during summer, currently focusing on Bali, Indonesia, but looking to expand to other locations. In August 2011 I was recognized as one of the 13 Best Workshop Instructors, as selected by PDN Magazine, the Bible of the commercial photography industry.
George Simian was voted one of the top 13 photo instructors in the United States in 2011. Photo District News magazine recently announced the results of their readers poll for best workshop instructors and George Simian made the list.
The Workshop will take place in the Brewery Arts Complex at the Diavolo Dance Studio, 616 Moulton Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90031. There will be plenty of free parking.
*In order to keep the cost of this workshop low, including no extra fee or charge for models, students are asked to share their photos with the models, actors and dancers after the workshop is over. Sharing your photos is a condition of your permission to post the images.
